Radio Promotion FAQs:

Q: What different types of radio promotion does KLM offer?

Many. Pop, Top 40, urban, dance, primary country, Music Row (country), jazz, metal, classical, Christian, rock, CMJ and more, all in local, regional and full national campaigns!

Q: How will I know how my song is performing at radio?

Not only will you be in constant contact with your KLM sales representative, you are provided a weekly radio report from KLM. This radio report will outline in detail the station ads, comments and spins so you can make more informative decisions on the rest of your release initiatives.

Q: Can you guarantee the amount of airplay my song will get?

There are no guarantees in the music industry, and this applies to radio airplay as well. What KLM will do, however, is give you the professional feedback and promotional efforts that it takes to give your single it’s best chance of success!

Q: How many songs should I promote to radio at once?

You can only promote one single at a time to radio for the length of the campaign. Once that campaign is done, you may want to choose to promote a follow up single to keep the momentum at radio going.

Q: What is a demo or “promo” CD?

In order to get your music heard by PDs and MDs, artists traditionally create and package a CD with only the song they wish to promote, not the full album. This is delivered to stations during your promotional campaign and is the primary source for new music on the radio, although digital delivery of promos is gaining popularity as well.

Q: I have heard of something called “CMJ” radio. What is it, and does KLM work with them too?

College Music Journal (CMJ) is a music events company and weekly magazine that is produced for and by predominantly independent music companies or college radio stations including a respected airplay chart. KLM has long-standing relationships with CMJ and has many popular promotional campaigns that utilize this important stepping stone in radio.

Q: What artists has KLM worked with?

Our promoters have run campaigns for: Kanye West, Alice in Chains, Garth Brooks, Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, Motley Crue, Capitol Records, Atlantic Records, Virgin Records, Columbia, Epic, RCA and more!

Q: How do I get paid royalties from having my song played on the radio?

Performance royalties are tracked and administered by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) like ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. Once you and your songs are registered with a PRO, they will track your song on radio playlists and amass royalties from those stations at the current rates for the amount of times your song is played.

Q: Does KLM promote to satellite and digital radio as well?

Yes. KLM promotes to all genres in all available formats, including Sirius/XM and digital/internet radio.

Q: What are promotional tours?

Promotional tours are an important part of the full radio campaign where artists travel to stations around the country giving interviews, on-air performances, recording sound clips for promos and generally promoting the single and themselves. For campaigns that require them, KLM promoters will arrange your travel and accommodations for these tours.

Q: Will you “coach” me for radio interviews and promotional shows?

Absolutely. KLM utilizes the best media trainers from across the country who specialize in making sure artists and performers are 100% prepared before they step in front of the microphone.
