A&R Services FAQs:
Q: What does A&R stand for?
Artist & Repertoire.
Q: What is A&R and what services does it include?
A&R is the process of developing an artist or project from the ground up to ensure longevity and appropriately plan for future success. It includes, but is not limited to: song selection, media training, management and booking, budget forecasts and analysis, touring, music lessons and more.
Q: Why is A&R so important?
There are many creative elements that must be coordinated with both the artist and the market at the right time. Any one of those elements not carefully planned and executed could make the difference between selling records and not selling records.
Q: Can’t I just run my own A&R campaign?
To an extent, yes. All artists, including those at major labels, depend on experienced A&R experts to guide them through the proper development of their career through this crucial phase.
Q: What is Media Training?
Media training is education and practice that prepares you for interviews, radio guest spots, press conferences and more.
Q: I’ve been told I’m nice and easy to talk to. Do I still need media training?
Yes. Media training is specifically tailored for each different media outlet to refine interviews and the public perception of you as an artist.
Q: How long does A&R work last?
In short, as long as it takes. Some artists develop quicker than others but eventually, every artist gets to the point where they are ready to move on to the next stages of their career.
Q: I have my own label. Will KLM handle A&R for my artists?
Absolutely. KLM is structured to be able to help with any responsibility of your label including A&R.
Q: My company is overseas. Will KLM train my artists for the US market?
Yes! International artists are strongly encouraged to utilize KLM’s expertise in the North American music industry to adapt to its different methods and trends.
Q: Why do you charge a retainer fee?
Because our A&R campaigns are so specifically tailored to each and every artist, a retainer fee allows your A&R team to address your exact needs and work your project properly.
